I can promise you the new album's marketing strategy will be anything but narrow.
David Discussion
More answers on a miserably rainy/slushy Monday morning in NYC:
No one is more sensitive to restricted international releases than me. I grew up in Brazil, with little access to many of the records and artists I wanted to buy (this is LONG before the internet), and it's one of the reasons I was ultimately motivated to relocate to the U.S. to pursue my music career dream and cram as much music between my ears as I possibly could. However, that doesn't change the fact that, since time immemorial, different countries have the right to assess whether an album is worth releasing there, based on existing demand. Thankfully, as we move away from physical to digital distribution, it'll become easier for fans to obtain music that isn't released in their own countries from abroad, but here too, we simply can't control the price of international shipping - just work as hard as we can to lower them when possible. Trust me - I get it. Every year, I lug suitcases packed with toys and underwear and video games and hair dye and god knows what else to my family members in Brazil, because international shipping is brutal for them as it is for any one of you, but that's the way of the world. Again, things will improve as time goes on, but it won't be overnight.
As for countries not serviceable by the DCO store, here too, the list is growing as we overcome existing publishing restrictions, but we simply haven't gotten there yet. This is a brave new world in many ways that we and other companies are building from scratch, and we simply don't control every aspect of the music business, but rely on publishers, copyright agencies, and any number of different entities to break through territorial boundaries in an easier, cheaper way for all.
The same will sometimes happen with video content we promote on DCO. I simply can't strike publishing and copyright usage deals for MTV or YouTube, so there WILL be situations where content created and shown by these and other companies will only be viewable in certain countries. My point is, there are complex laws governing this planet of ours and we simply don't control them - all we can do is work to account for them.
I can promise you the new album's marketing strategy will be anything but narrow. David's a former American Idol champion, so we'd never be dumb enough to overlook the broad appeal that the show gave him to begin with.
Working with charities to promote music is of course something that has to be handled with the utmost respect and care, but the same could be said for charities that use star power to drive contributions. So we will gladly partner up with the charities close to David's heart if and when activities make sense,, to the benefit of all - but first and foremost the people that the charity is benefiting.
What you say about NPR is true. They may not have the largest traffic on the web, but what they have reaches a very serious and well-educated music consumer, so we often work with them on promotions of all kinds.
I'll ask our mod to create an official sales reporting thread in the David Discussion section (if there isn't a principal thread already that we can update) where I can drop in updated sales info about once a month, cool?
I don't care enough about the counter to lose sleep over it, but I'd rather it not exist if the numbers are just bullcrap. So I'll wait a little longer for them to fix it and if there's just no way, it'll probably have to go. But again, this is, like, number 978 on my priority list.
DCO, Twitter, Facebook, and whatever online platforms we can work on with David will be maximized and cross-promoted when it makes sense to. Ultimately, 90% of the info from one can be found on the other, and tha vast majority of fans pick one and stick with it, rather than picking apart every last moresl of information and cross-referencing it on a daily basis...I' mean who's got the time? Ok some folks do, but my point is, you can expect plenty of natural 'bleed' between these properties, punctuated by concerted promotions tying them together.
Requesting songs from radio is a VERY delicate situation where the label is concerned because we are not allowed to influence consumer behavior in such a direct ways as to be seen as trying to muck up the charts. We thank you for requesting David's music respectfully from your local radio stations, but that's usually the extent of our involvement in that area. We have one of the best radio promotion departments in the business already taking care of this, so DCO doesn't have to be a front line in this regard.
We will be developing a mobile platform to better represent the site in that medium, and even house exclusive content or promos (more like an app, but free) if it makes sense to. This too is simply waiting on album art and other assets to get into production.
Made, your suggestion about separating things makes sense now that the amount of info here has exploded, but I honestly don't have time to keep tabs on multiple threads. I get maybe a few minutes a day to stop in here and review questions (and then find short bursts spread over hours and hours of multi-tasking all of my responsibilities here at RCA) to slowly craft all of these answers.
